Yesterday I finished my first stage race of the year. North End Classic Yuma AZ. I feel the race was successful enough for the first test of the year. The race was designed for sprinters and since I am not a pure sprinter I used the race to watch and learn. The Stage race started Friday night with street sprints in a casino parking lot. The disorganization made for a long night. Saturday’s road race was a flat 33-mile loop covered 3 times. With a light wind, it was funny to watch the group struggle to form an echelon. I tried a few short hard efforts to test the legs but mostly I just rode the wave of the group to finish in the main pack. Sunday’s Criterium was a tight circuit with little room to pass. I also tried a few laps off the front but once again rode in the main pack focusing on my bike handling skills.
My time here in Tucson has gone quickly; I cannot believe I am already in my last week. The riding in the sun has been enjoyable but the lack of roads leaves much to be desired. I believe I accomplished my main goal of starting a good base for the season. With a long season ahead, I have a lot of time and room to improve. I am looking forward to the challenges.
